How much of the problem do you think is a selection bias? When the Internet was young a certain type of person self-selected to get on it, usually through some serious technical hurdles. Facebook, also, in the early days required a college email ID to access.

A lot of prophets assumed that more people would equal a better Internet and society, but that assumption seems to have been false. More and more it seems to be that we need a better society in order to have a better Internet. That there’s nothing magical about the medium that makes us better than we are.
