As everyone could tell you, earnings and readership are dramatically down on Medium. I went from regularly making $1,500 (a month) to struggling to make $500. This has been coming for a while, with the algorithm change. I won’t get into why Medium is doing this. It’s essentially a billionaire vanity project. Who knows.

All I knew was that resources were getting scarce here, and I had to move. That’s why, nine months ago, I started doing content in parallel, here and on Ghost. Now I post in both places (so I only half-left Medium) and while it’s still shit, I at least don’t have all my eggs in one basket.

Now I earn $200 a month from my own newsletter (plus a vestigial Patreon), which is terribly compared to the old days, but is nearly 50% of my macabre Medium earnings. It’s taking a lot longer to get going, but I at least have one foot out of the grave.

Moving To (And From) Ghost

While you can use Ghost completely self-hosted, I paid $348 for the yearly pro version (which is a lot), and that included help migrating all my content from Medium. The hosted (Pro) version is great because it takes all the setup and config stress away, but I’m quickly nearing the 1,000 member limit. Once I hit that it gets significantly more…
